December ZenKitchen Newsletter

Dear friends of ZenKitchen,

December 1. Do you say "ah....that's nice, only a few weeks to the holidays", or does your stress level suddenly rise a few notches thinking of all the holiday shopping and preparations you have to take care of? Well, I'm hoping I can help reduce your stress and bring you energy to face the sometimes challenging holiday season ahead. How you may ask?

1) If you're coming to the special ZenKitchen December 15 dinner, you are in for a treat. If you haven't reserved a place yet, there are only a few seats left so reserve as soon as you can. To give you a brief snapshot, we'll have a pianist and hors d'oeuvres before the dinner, there will be a comforting four course gourmet dinner, and after the dinner you'll have the chance to have a drink, mingle with guests and sing, or listen, to holiday carols around the grand piano in an 1860s mansion. Could this be more Dickens-like?! I'll be donating a percentage of the proceeds from the dinner to the Friends of Abandoned Pets (www.foap.on.ca) in honour of our dog Olga who touched many lives since she was rescued and passed away last year around this time, and to support its valuable work of helping homeless cats and dogs in our community.

If you're coming to the dinner, please review the scenario for the dinner below as there are some changes.

2) In response to customer requests and just in time for the holidays, we are offering ZenKitchen dinner gift certificates that you can give to friends and family so they can share in the food and spirit of the dinners. They are good for any ZenKitchen dinner in 2008 and all we ask is that the gift certificate recipients reserve well in advance so we know they are coming. You can even throw in a bottle of wine with the dinner. A good eco-friendly Christmas gift that is consumable and nourishing. Please see below for more information.

3) Come to the Ottawa Japanese Mochitsuki Festival on Sunday, December 9 to take out your stress and have some fun. This event is for the community to gather together to pound hot rice in a traditional manner, using a big wooden mallot and bowl, in order to make mochi rice cakes that are eaten in a variety of ways, such as in soups or around red bean paste as manju cakes. Mochi cakes are eaten on New Years Day in a special soup by the Japanese as they are believed to bring good luck for the year. It's a fun event to participate in, meaning you get to swing that big mallot and hit hot rice constantly to soften it if that's your thing, or you can just come to watch and eat.. I'll be there helping to tranform these big mounds of hot, sticky rice into beautiful round mochi cakes that people can buy and eat. Below is more information on the event.

4) Don't forget to mark your 2008 calendar with upcoming ZenKitchen Dinners: February 23; March 29; May 31; June 21

In closing, I wish for you and your loved ones a relaxing holiday season and a bright, beautiful and delicious new year ahead! As always, my warm and heartfelt thanks, for your support and appreciation of what I love to do. It makes all the difference and is the best gift I could ever receive! Bon appetite, Caroline

ZenKitchen December 15
6:30 pm - There is a group of yoginis who are having a brief laughter yoga session before the reception to set the tone for their holiday gathering and they have invited others to join in if they wish. This is not a demanding hot yoga but one where you can go at your own pace and do your own thing if you wish, with the common denominator being laughing. If you need more laughter if your life (who doesn't?), and they say that laughter keeps you young (now, you're listening!), then here is your chance. This is all optional and free of course.
7 pm - Reception starts with a pianist at the grand piano and hors d'oeuvres
7:45 pm - The dining room opens for dinner
After dinner - The chance to sing and listen to holiday carols around the grand piano, have an after-dinner drink, and mingle with old and new friends
